Unveiled in 2006, the American Gold Buffalo coin was the first-ever 24-karat gold coin from the U.S. Mint. This is the 11th release of the American Gold Buffalo and it has a limited maximum mintage each year, increasing its desirability among collectors and investors alike. The coin’s design is based on one of America’s most popular circulation coins, the “Indian Head” or “Buffalo Nickel” that was first introduced in 1913. The original design was executed by sculptor James Earle Fraser, a student of Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Saint-Gaudens is the designer of the coin that was the inspiration for today’s American Eagle.
