The Gold Krugerrand was the first Gold bullion coin produced in the world and has been a worldwide standard since the third of July 1967. From 1967 to 2017, the South African Mint and Rand Refinery issued the South African Krugerrand Coins only as gold bullion specimens. The mint introduced fractional-ounce versions of the Gold Krugerrand in 1980. For the 50th anniversary of the South African Krugerrand, the South African Mint introduced the first-ever Silver Krugerrand.
In 2017, that first-ever South African Silver Krugerrand was issued as a Premium Uncirculated coin. That coin has a maximum mintage of 1 million silver coins produced with the finest quality of silver and extra care in the coining process. In 2018, the coin became an annual installment from the mint and continues to feature each year.
On the obverse of 1 oz South African Silver Krugerrand Coins is a depiction of Paul Kruger. The first elected President of the South African Republic, Kruger was an influential Boer figure in 19th-century South Africa and led the republic into the 20th century before finishing his term in exile.
The reverse face of South African Silver Krugerrand Coins includes the national emblem. The Springbok antelope is considered the national emblem of the modern Republic of South Africa and has featured on South African coins for decades.
